Is your SOAP or SHAMPOO UNSAFE? What are some homemade natural alternatives to potentially harmful products?

I looked up some of the ingredients on the back of products that I use daily. I was shocked to find that some of these chemicals are not very safe. While I don't think there is immediate health risk, prolonged use (say, daily for 40 years) might be another story. What are some safe alternatives for soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, soothing dry lips or skin, etc. Any ideas? What are the statistics on health problems of our ancestors based on those today? Do we have more health problems than our ancestors in some ways? What are the most dangerous chemicals found commonly in everyday toiletries, such as soap, makeup, sunscreen, etc.?Is your SOAP or SHAMPOO UNSAFE? I use Burt's Bees shampoo. It has natural ingredients. Many shampoos have a bad chemical in them called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate..and you should also watch out for Propylene Glycol and parabens. Don't use any conditioners with mineral oil.

You can try these natural brands: Burt's Bees, Avalon Organics, Kiss My Face, Beauty Without Cruelty, Alba (a favorite of mine), John Master's Organics (another favorite), or Jason.

I order from Vitacost.com, because the prices are cheaper.

Another comment: Conventional shampoos and styling products don't improve the quality of your hair, they actually artificially make your hair look healthier. For example, Pantene Pro V uses a waxy substance to give hair a smooth feeling. Is your SOAP or SHAMPOO UNSAFE? What are some homemade natural alternatives to potentially harmful products?
If you are so paranoid about what *MIGHT* happen to you 40+ years down the road, try using organic products like Avalon Organics and Tom's of Maine.

I'd rather take the risk and be clean than to send people gagging and gasping for air when I walk into a room.
It is not terribly possible to compare our health overall to that of our ancestors and come out with a straight answer. That opens up all kinds of different variables. Like the lack of technology and undiagnosed issues that plagued them. I am sure some things we do today do have more impact on our health but the same can be said for our ancestors. So if you are worried (and I don't blame you) you can use more natural products. I know that Whole Foods carry more natural products and their are specialty stores that you could look up in or near your area. You can even make your own like our ancestors. I never have but there are a ton of online resources out there.
