Can you get product build up on hair if you only use shampoo and conditioner?

My hairdresser said that I have product build up on my hair from using a popular shampoo and conditioner due to the silicone in it. Can This be true? Or is he trying to sell me products from the shop? Can you get product build up on hair if you only use shampoo and conditioner?
yes this is true but if you use a shampoo and condition medicated for your hair e. g ( normal, greasy, dry), this can reduce build up and if you use a salon brand like redken or fudge no build up will occur as they are much better for your hair. So yes your hairdresser will want you to buy his salon brands of shampoo and conditioner but it is better for your hair! Hope this helped! Can you get product build up on hair if you only use shampoo and conditioner?
I suppose some shampoo and conditioner could leave your hair with build up. I guess it would depend on what kind you use. Maybe if you try switching and see if she says the same thing, if she does, then shes just trying to sell you something. If not , then she will notice the improvement.

Product buildup , i thought, was from use of products like hair spray and hair gel. I guess i never looked at shampoo and conditioner as a hair product, i always looked at it as a cleaner lol I could be wrong...*waits for hair dresser to answer this question*
Hmm this is actually a difficult one.Product build up per se, is a term from the 80's when hairspray built up in very producted hair.

It has been said to me by reps that silicons in conditioners can build up on hair although i really havnt seen any of this from those and have asked for proof of findings and recieved none.

Shampoo really mostly goes down the sink,so it wont be from that.

BUUUT some silocone serums may stay stubborn in the hair for sometime (this ive seen)and also pantene contains silicon. As for it building up....Very hard to say but i think not.

And that said hairdresser wanted to sell you a clarifying shampoo.
Yes, it's true. You don't have to keep switching shampoo, though, just use a clarifying shampoo occasionally to get rid of the build-up, or you can try a vinegar rinse. Dilute some cider vinegar and use this to rinse your hair between shampooing and conditioning - make sure you rinse it out well or you'll be left with the smell!

Also, you can get shampoos and conditioners which don't contain silicone (check the ingredients - anything ending with '-cone' is silicone based). They're quite few and far between in the UK, though.
its true, you need to thoroughly rinse your hair, i had this a few years ago. i loved to sit between my boyfriends legs while he towelled and combed my hair, but he used to tell me my hair was like yours, now i rinse properly and its fine,
its 100% possible! i had product build up too from using the same shampoo ALOT and no matter how many times i washed my hair it still looked greasy, so frustrating. then i went to a hairddresser too, who told me what i had. finally, someone who knew what he was talking about! i thought, he told me to get a clarifying shampoo, and i also thought he was trying to flog me a product, but its true, product build up is possible

get pantene pro v clarifying shampoo and see the difference after you use it, :)
I've recently started using a range from Boots, called Naked. It's 97% natural, with ingredients like marshmallow and Green Tea. The whole range smells fabulous. I also use a clarifying shampoo from neutragena, to prevent any build-up, because I do use some products, as I straighten my hair regularly. However, I only use the clarifying shampoo once every couple of weeks or so, because it strips everything out and makes it really ';squeaky'; clean.
yeah i have did something like that called nanoqueratina its sooo good but not shampoo %26amp; conditioner u can acheive a better %26amp; half way healthier but not the same with nanoqueratina
switch up your shampoo twice a week. Even if its a .99 cent shampoo, the change does your hair good.

If I use the same shampoo/conditioner on a weekly basis, my hair gets nasty and greasy. Switching twice a week ended that.
look at the ingredients in the soap. if silicone is one of the first 5 he is not lying.
Your hair can get used to having one product on it, which is the build up. Try swapping brands for a while. It doesnt neccessarily mean you must buy expensive products from your hairstylist just high street brands are fine. This will give your hair a break. I would also suggest trying a deep cleansing shampoo to help clear this build up. Hope this helps :-)
Yes all the fake plastics in it build up.

Buy a 99 cent bottle of suave clarifying shampoo, and every week wash your hair with it.
I think he is just trying to sell you something. Shampoo and conditioner don't leave your hair with product buildup, they REMOVE product build up! If you only use shampoo and conditioner, and NOTHING else, there is no way you could have product buildup. Hope that answers your question!
products like pantene have a silicone base so you would get a build up but unless your colouring your hair or perming it wont make a difference. silicone causes a barrier on your hair shaft which stops colours and perms penetrating the hair properly.
I have often heard that you should change shampoos and conditioners every so often. Not that you have to buy salon products just switch to different kinds.
my hairdresser told me the same and i use pantene. is that what you are using?
Your hairdresser may be right about the buildup. I suggest a professional clarifying shampoo for this problem. You should not use this type everyday, only once a week or it will cause the scalp to become overly dry and cause a dry scalp condition or your hair could become over oily from the sebaceous glands being overworked.

Note: This type of shampoo removes product buildup. Only buy products from professional salons, they have better quality.

Hope that this helps.
it is possible to get a product build up im afraid .someof the popular shampoos do contain a silicone like ingredient to weigh the hair down to make it easier to straighten.try switching to another shampoo every coupleof weeks and just switch between the two.a hint is if the advert is only harping on about long glossy straighthair then it is likely it is going to have a silicone based ingredient in it ask your mum which shampoo she uses and switch between that and your normal one.
yes this is true, most conditioners leave build-up on the hair as they ';cling'; to the hairshafts it is not easily washed out with just water alone. hence why you should use a clarifying shampoo every now and again to remove build-up, but be warned- if you have colour on your hair then it will draw some of that out of the hairshaft aswell, not much but a little.
